Lighting FAQ

1. What size light should I use in my Dining Room or Foyer?

A dining room light is usually 1/2 the diameter of the dining room table. The size of a light for a foyer and for most other rooms can be estimated by adding together the room's measurements. For example, a room that is 15' by 10' could use a light with a diameter of 25".

2. How high should I hang my chandelier or wall light?

Wall lights should be mounted around 60" off of the ground. Chandeliers are typically mounted so that the bottom is around 30" above the table or counter being lit.

3. What are some ways to light my bathroom?

Bathroom lighting needs to be bright enough for grooming while not overly harsh or glaring. A light mounted on the wall over a mirror works well with frosted bulbs. Another way to light a bathroom is to mount lights both above the mirror and on the sides to surround the vanity in light and eliminate shadows.

4. How can I light my kitchen?

Kitchens can be well lit by using both general and task lighting. General light can mean a fluorescent ceiling fixture or track lighting in the center of the kitchen. The key is to provide ample overall lighting. Task lighting is for working areas. Under-cabinet lighting or mini-pendants over an island can make a dramatic difference in the quality of light in a kitchen.

5. Are ceiling fans a good idea?

Yes, ceiling fans can reduce a summer-time electric bill by 40% and a winter-time electric bill by 10%. Fans can lower the temperature in a room by 7 degrees, and use very little electricity, typically the equivalent of a 100 watt light bulb or less, making them a very cost effective way of regulating the temperature of a room.

6. What type of exterior lighting will last a long time?

The materials used in construction of exterior lights are very important in terms of durability and resistance to rusting. Cast aluminum is a very durable material that will not rust, and is available in many different styles and finishes.

7. Why should I consider dimmers?

Dimmers are a good way to add interest to a room. They allow a room to have several different moods, from bright and lively to soft and intimate. As added benefits, dimmers significantly extend the life of incandescent light bulbs and light bulbs use less energy when dimmed.

8. Why should I consider fluorescent lighting?

Fluorescent lighting is becoming more widely used in homes. It is 3 to 4 times more efficient than standard incandescent light bulbs and will last around 10 to 12 times as long. This means that a fluorescent light bulb costs much less to operate over its lifetime than a standard light bulb. Other benefits of using fluorescent lighting are the advances that have been made in color quality and the styles of lights available. Consumers no longer have to settle for the "blue" color of fluorescent light. Warm colors are now available that closely match the color of standard light bulbs.
